Running with Purpose: AFC Half and Cabrillo National Monument Foundation

By Alora Johnson Content Creator & Strategist, In Motion Events and Adriana Wolf, CNMF Outreach Coordinator

When you line up at the start of the 48th annual America's Finest City Half Marathon & 5K, you're not just kicking off one of the most scenic races in the country, you're also beginning from a place of incredible natural and historical significance: Cabrillo National Monument.

A Historic Starting Line

Every year since the race's inception, runners have started their 13.1-mile trek at the tip of Point Loma in the heart of San Diego’s national park. The views are unforgettable! With soaring ocean cliffs, panoramic bay vistas, and glimpses of downtown San Diego in the distance. It's breathtaking. But beyond the views, this site is a treasure of both history and habitat.

As the proud nonprofit partner of Cabrillo National Monument, CNMF is honored to work with In Motion Events to ensure that every runner who begins their race here helps protect it—for the next runner, the next visitor, and the next generation.

Our Mission: Protecting the Park for All

Established in 1956, CNMF supports everything from science education for local students to habitat restoration and conservation efforts that protect Point Loma's rare coastal ecosystems. The foundation also helps fund interpretive exhibits and ranger-led programs that keep the monument accessible and engaging for over 800,000 visitors from around the world each year.

How Runners Can Help

When you register for the AFC Half Marathon or 5K, you'll have the option to make a donation directly to CNMF. A portion of the race proceeds also supports the foundation's important work. Every dollar helps protect this special place and funds programs that connect people with science, nature, and local history.

Looking to make an even greater impact? Consider becoming a CNMF member, making a one-time donation, or volunteering at the park.

Race Day Etiquette at Cabrillo

Because Cabrillo is a national park unit and highly sensitive ecosystem, your race-day behavior matters! Please help us protect the beauty of Cabrillo by following a few simple guidelines:

  • Stay on designated paths and walking areas. The native plants and coastal habitat are delicate and easily damaged.

  • Use the designated restrooms. Do not use natural areas or bushes! This helps protect the ecosystem and ensures a respectful experience for all.

  • Toss trash only in trash cans or at water stations. Wind can easily carry cups and wrappers into sensitive habitats, so wait for the next aid station before discarding anything.

  • Follow the volunteer and ranger instructions. They're here to help keep you safe and the park clean and respected.

A Race with Meaning

From the monument to the harbor, past historic ships, and into beautiful Balboa Park, this race connects runners with the very best of our city.

Register for the 48th annual America's Finest City Half Marathon & 5K, and begin your race at Cabrillo National Monument—San Diego’s only national park.

Thanks to In Motion Events, your race participation helps protect our park’s sensitive ecosystems, support youth science education, and preserve a legacy that begins right at the starting line.
