National Park Foundation Grant Expands Access to Cabrillo National Monument for Title I Students Across San Diego County

Cabrillo National Monument Foundation is thrilled to share that we have been selected as a 2026-2027 recipient of the National Park Foundation Open Outdoors for Kids grant!

Building on a child's innate wonder and curiosity about the world around them, Open OutDoors for Kids helps national parks and park partners create new educational experiences or expand existing ones to complement what students are learning in school. The National Park Foundation is supporting projects like ours to introduce students to national parks at a young age, fostering an appreciation for the outdoors and inspiring the next generation of park stewards.

As a returning Open OutDoors for Kids grantee, this grant cycle will help us continue providing bus funding for Title I schools across San Diego County. This renewed support from the National Park Foundation builds on the impact of the program in 2025, when Open OutDoors for Kids funding helped bring more than 1,400 students from 22 Title I schools to Cabrillo National Monument.

Once at the park, students take part in a ranger led field trip in science or history. Whether exploring the rocky intertidal zone, investigating our urban watershed, or learning about Cabrillo’s cultural history, Open OutDoors for Kids gives students the opportunity to experience Cabrillo as a living classroom, learn from park rangers, and build a lasting connection with their national park.

We are grateful to the National Park Foundation for its continued investment in connecting young people with national parks and for helping make meaningful outdoor learning experiences at Cabrillo more accessible to students throughout San Diego County.
